Shed my skin

That pair of shoes. You were a teen or pre-teen, you loved those shoes, but then they began to pinch. You were just growing too fast. Time for new shoes, your parent said. But you were not ready to let those shoes go. They were so cool, so pretty. They were so ‘you’. They helped define you. But then the walk to school, and the shoes pinched, and the walk home was even worse. It was hard to even make it home. You showed up back at the house limping. It was time to throw out the favorite shoes.

Like this, as we start to meditate we can begin to outgrow elements of our lives that may seem to define us. As the snake sheds its skin in order to evolve and grow, we need to shed parts of ourselves that no longer reflect our new expanded consciousness state. As we slough off that limiting opinion of ourselves or that behavior that no longer reflects our true nature we gain mobility. Our options and range of motion increases. Freed of the pinching effects of the limiting belief or behavior we can continue to grow and expand

If we hold on and resist the transformation the shoes start to pinch. Our gait becomes cramped and awkward. What used to make us feel happy begins to make us feel uncomfortable or constrained. We experience pain. If we don’t let go of what is pinching our metaphorical toes, we are ultimately limiting our own self-growth.

What behaviors or self-opinions are you ready to let go of?
