Presents/Presence

During the holidays with the excitement of parties, gift giving, and family get-togethers it can be tempting to cut back on our meditation practice so we can attend to the gift shopping, travel planning and party organizing. But it is good to reflect on what these gifts and parties actually represent and what is it we most wish to give our loved ones.

What is a gift anyway but a representation of our attention and love? The gift speaks for our consideration and our care. Yes, we are paying attention. Yes, I know you will love this specific sweater. Yes, I invited these people because I knew you would enjoy them. Yes, I made this meal just for you. Yes, I am present, here with you.

This is what our loved ones most desire from us, just this, our attention. If we are running ourselves ragged, trying to do all the things, can we really be present? Are we paying attention?

So, when you feel tempted to skip that meditation this holiday season, give this a thought; what do I really want to give my loved ones? And consider giving them your shiniest, most present self which we know we can access via our daily meditation.

Because being present is the best gift we can give. These are the good old days.
